How to use Google Analytics to see what users are clicking on your page

February 2nd, 2010

The Site Overlay tool, located under the “Content” section of Analytics shows you where people are actually clicking on your page. This is a feature that a lot of expensive analytics programs have, so having it to use for free is awesome!

This tool shows you the percentages of users that clicked on a particular image, promo, link or tab of any page on your site.

Why should you use it?

Use this tool to find out what is most popular to your users on each page. Knowing what information is most popular can also help you determine:

1. What information should you promote on your page?
Make it easier for users to find what their looking for by creating a promotional area with images linking to popular content/sections.

2. What products should I develop/sell?
If you know what people are looking for, then it’s an opportunity for you to either create a product to sell, or ramp up marketing efforts to sell more of what’s popular.

Disadvantages

One major disadvantage of site overlay feature is the inability to show individual click ratio for 2 or more links which points to same page on the website. For eg. There are 2 links on your home page which points to Products Page and we get 4% and 9% clicks both will show 13%.

New to Google Analytics?
Google Analytics is free – all you need to do is sign up for a Google Analytics Account, (or use your existing Google account if you have one).

Go to http://www.google.com/analytics, complete the registration form and begin by Adding a new website profile.
